For reducing bulk I am pressing my seams open. I use a very small stitch when paper piecing, 2.0 on my Viking, so that it is secure and tears easily. I am using Carol Doak (sp) paper I ordered online for another project. I'm going to need more though. What is the vellum like? The paper I have is pretty thin and tears easily, not in a bad way.

i'm so glad you like it.

i always worry about recommending products - just because i like it doesn't mean it works for everyone else.

i remember the first time i used it - i knew i would never use anything else again.

i got 2 reams in the mail yesterday - no tax no shipping - can't beat that.

i prefer the vellum paper over carol doaks but i know many people love her paper.

the paper is actually called Neenah Paper UV/Ultra II 17 Weight in Radiant White.

the paper tears away with total ease and i like that you can see thru the paper.

here's a link so you can see how translucent the paper is

    http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/sto...3&Item_ID=1087

its much cheaper to buy it by the ream then it is to order it from the above link.

Well, the term was really derogatory used for the very poor folks that came out to CA during the drought, in the 20's. Reading about Tom Joad, I decided they deserved way more respect that to be called names...what hardships they endured, and what discrimination and degradation they went thru living here in the valley in CA. Very sad story. So, I don't like using the term...

You know you are not allowed to die until you use up all your fabric. I'm pretty sure that's a rule somewhere.

I think maybe it would help if I traced the patterns on thinner paper. My paper won't run the thin stuff through. I ordered the cd from Connecting Threads and it should be here soon. Hope it works on a Mac. Haven't given up yet. Don't let it be my age - Ha!
If your paper is a bit thick, try this trick. Unthread your sewing needle on your machine and then go over each of the lines. This will perforate the paper, making it easier to rip out once you've actually sewn it. It can take a bit of extra time but it's so worth it! I do this to all my paper piecing projects and it's really made a difference. I use regular copier paper, which can be a bit thick when compared to vellum, but I haven't had a single problem since perforating the paper first and then going back and sewing everything together. Hope this helps!
    Great tip Martha Jo!

The problem I have with Carol Doakes paper is that it jams in my printer, even doing just one sheet at a time. The vellum is not a problem=less swearing and hair pulling!!!!!!!! LOL

I think the term Okie has changed, but it shows you have a heart towards those that had or have hardships. This is a little different but I can't help but think when I moved to OH for a little while after I married, people there were asking if I lived in tepees and rode horses as a means of transportation.(I am not of Indian descent, so I don't look lndian) This was in the early 70's. I'd never been out of OK and I was so surprised at how the rest of the states looked at OK.

I also press most of my seams open but it really depends on where the seam is located and if it will benifit to have them open or not. Where it will definatly cause excess bulk, they are pressed open.
I have the Carol Doak pp paper. I like the vellum so much better
